Barron’s AP Biology

Barron’s AP Biology Review

So I got this book about 2 months before the AP test. I opened it like 5 days before the AP test and started cramming and cramming non-stop. Please do not use this approach unless you find the world of Biology fascinating. The five days with this book, I must say, were torturous but very helpful. Now you need to understand that I probably have the worst AP Biology teacher imaginable, he covered 30% of the topics and did pointless labs the entire time. Anyway about the book, it is very well organized, no mistakes, errors, and probably the best substitute for a textbook. I got a 4 on the AP exam using this book and some released exams in 5 days work.

Now for many of you who can’t settle for anything but a 5, I will tell you what you need.

Getting a 5:

- Get this Book
- Get released exams (easy to find, try this site:[...]) and do them all.
- Read this book once throughout the year. Then read the book again 3 weeks before the test until the test day.
- I can’t stress the importance of not slacking off like I did. If you have a good AP Bio class (unlike me), do all the homework!

After the test, I felt pretty confident about getting a 5. I think not enough detail in the Free Response messed me up or something. But I am happy with a 4. I know a lot of people who would trade a 5 day study session to get out of a semester of freshman Bio. But getting that 5 would have got me out an elective Bio semseter UGHHH…..

oh.. and yea.. DONT GET CLIFFSAP unless you think you are already sweet at Biology. This book has a lot more important detail.

Getting you a 5 will only cost like the 13 bucks you pay for this book and a couple hours finding all those exams at that site (just make an account and start asking, people are really friendly.)

If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat

September 1, 2010

If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat Review

I loved this book, and it couldn’t have come at more perfect timing in my life! I have often felt inadequate in just about everything I do. My relationships, my job, you name it, I always feel like I’m not good enough. I am afraid of failure. However, the chapter about “seeing the wind” and learning about failure management — and learning from failure itself — really made me see that there is no point in worrying about it. Everything in life has risks, and the only true failure is being a “boat potato!”

I also really liked John Ortberg’s writing style. It is light and entertaining and he has a great sense of humor. I found myself laughing out loud several times during the course of this book. “I may be small potatoes, Lord, but this spud’s for you!”

In addition, he also provides questions for reflection at the end of each chapter. I imagine that would make this book perfect for a small group study. However, they are also good for personal reflection as well.

If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat Overview

FOR DISTRIBUTION OUTSIDE THE USA. Out on the risky waters of faith, Jesus is waiting to meet you and offer you his Holy Spirit power that will change your life forever, deepening your faith and trust in God.

The Wind in the Willows

August 30, 2010

The Wind in the Willows Review

This childhood favorite is as fresh and charming as when it was first published. Yes, I admit I may be somewhat nostalgic, for I remember my grandparents reading me a picture book version of some of the stories when I was a little girl. But I have reread the book over the years and even enjoyed the play, TOAD OF TOAD HALL. As an adult I still delight in the antics of our animal friends as they face the joys and challenges of riverbank life.

The four protagonists remind us of folks we know, which endears them to us with their all-too-human dreams and foibles. Ratty, the water rat, is the sensible Brains of the outfit; Mole with his dreams of exploration aboveground is the Heart; gruff and tough Badger, who hates being disturbed during hibernation, is the Muscle of the group. Then comes The Toad who provides comic relief in the form of his vanity, childishness and his utter disregard for property, the law, and the feelings of others. Both people and animals must adapt to survive in the forest and streams of life–learning to rely on and value true Friendship.

Exhausted from spring cleaning Mole sets out to discover the world Aboveground, where he find the joys of riverbank Life–after almost drowning–with his new friend, host and mentor, Ratty. But beware the deadly perils lurking in the adjacent Wild Wood, whose denizens chivvy and harass the river bankers! Kenneth Graham weaves a delightful tale with willow strands of comraderie, dedication to ideals and self sacrifice. Come ride the roads with Toady in his stolen motor car, and scull down the river with Ratty. Savor the sentimental whisperings of Home with kindly Mole; join the search for lost Porky. Finally: cheer the ranks of Badger’s Avengers! But will any Intervention succeed in reforming the irrepressible Toad?

This beloved children’s classic combines humor and pathos with lively adventure in an animal realm which parallels human endeavor. This book is a true gem, to be rediscovered by successive generations and eagerly read by children of all ages!

The Wind in the Willows Overview

Since its first publication in 1908, generations of adults and children have cherished Kenneth Grahame’s classic, The Wind in the Willows. For in this entrancing, lyrical world of gurgling rivers and whispering reeds live four of the wisest, wittiest, noblest, and most lovable creatures in all literature—Rat, Mole, Badger, and Toad of Toad Hall. Like true adventurers, they glory in life’s simplest pleasures and natural wonders. But it is Toad, cocky and irrepressible in his goggles and overcoat, whose passion for motorcars represents the free and fearless spirit in all of us; just as it’s Toad’s downfall that inspires the others to test Grahame’s most precious theme—the miracle of loyalty and friendship.

From the Paperback edition.

The Wind in the Willows Specifications

“[Mole] thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river. Never in his life had he seen a river before–this sleek, sinuous, full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh, to fling itself on fresh playmates that shook themselves free, and were caught and held again.” Such is the cautious, agreeable Mole’s first introduction to the river and the Life Adventurous. Emerging from his home at Mole End one spring, his whole world changes when he hooks up with the good-natured, boat-loving Water Rat, the boastful Toad of Toad Hall, the society- hating Badger who lives in the frightening Wild Wood, and countless other mostly well-meaning creatures. Michael Hague’s exquisitely detailed, breathtaking color illustrations on almost every generous spread–along with Kenneth Grahame’s elegant, delightfully old-fashioned characterizations of the animals–make this book a wonderful read-aloud. Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows has enchanted readers for four generations, and this lavishly illustrated gift edition is perhaps the finest around. (All ages, or 9 to 12)

Tangerine: Tenth-Anniversary Edition

Tangerine: Tenth-Anniversary Edition Review

For as long as he can remember, seventh-grader Paul Fisher has lived in the shadow of The Erik Fisher Football Dream. Ever since Paul’s older brother Erik kicked his first successful 50 yard field goal, it seems to Paul that the entire Fisher household has revolved around Erik getting a football scholarship in hopes of one day advancing to the Pros. But there are two big things Paul just can’t understand: 1) why everyone adores Erik, who he truly knows to be cruel and underhanded, and 2) why those same people are also in love with football. Now soccer, that is a sport Paul can get really get behind. Even though he happens to be legally blind, Paul is a talented goalie and is more than ready for the soccer season to begin at his new middle school in the town of Tangerine, Florida. Though, as usual, Paul is the first to notice that their seemingly idyllic planned community is not what it appears to be as natural disasters strike again and again and neighbors turn against one another; all while football and soccer games continue to be won. And lost.

I can now fully understand why Tangerine is often embraced by educators. Its many themes could easily foster intriguing and highly relevant discussions in any classroom. Truly, it is astounding that such a small book could contain such a wide range of significant topics yet still remain so accessible to teens on a variety of levels. A list of themes discussed include clashes between the haves vs the have-nots, the impact of family relationships, the treatment of those with ‘disabilities’, environmental issues, race discrimination, and even bullying scenarios. And that’s not even a comprehensive list. But even with its appeal to teachers, Tangerine can still readily resonate with any reader be they young or old, student or parent due to the honest and captivating narration of the observant Paul. His voice is clear, insightful, and above all, entertaining. A hero with coke-bottle glasses and courage to spare. I’m glad I found room on my shelves for Paul Fisher and Tangerine. It’s one I’ll be sure to share with my own son. Even if I have to wait a few more years to read it with him.

Tangerine: Tenth-Anniversary Edition Overview

A season with the toughest soccer team in the county gives a teen the confidence to stand up to his wicked brother. “Smart, adaptable, and anchored by a strong sense of self-worth, Paul makes a memorable protagonist in a cast of vividly drawn characters; multiple yet taut plotlines lead to a series of gripping climaxes and revelations. Readers are going to want more from this author.”–Kirkus Reviews

Tangerine: Tenth-Anniversary Edition Specifications

So what if he’s legally blind? Even with his bottle-thick, bug-eyed glasses, Paul Fisher can see better than most people. He can see the lies his parents and brother live out, day after day. No one ever listens to Paul, though–until the family moves to Tangerine. In Tangerine, even a blind, geeky, alien freak can become cool. Who knows? Paul might even become a hero! Edward Bloor’s debut novel sparkles with wit, authenticity, unexpected plot twists, and heart. The writing is so fine, the story so triumphant, that you just might stand up and shout when you get to the end. Hooray!

Goddess Boot Camp

August 26, 2010

Goddess Boot Camp Review

In the further adventures of eighteen-year-old Phoebe Castro, close descendant of the Greek goddess Nike, Phoebe is struggling to control her recently discovered, very strong, and randomly triggered powers. If she doesn’t get them under control soon, she is terrified the Olympian gods will smite her as they did her father. To help her pass an upcoming trial by the gods in only a few weeks, her stepfather sends Phoebe to Goddess Boot Camp. But Phoebe discovers it is run by her aggravating stepsister and her boyfriend Griffin’s ex-girlfriend, a fellow goddess who can’t seem to get the message that she’s no longer with Griffin. Worse, all the other attendees are only ten years old!

This is a real treat for anyone who enjoys young adult contemporary-fantasy novels with a big dose of comedy. The romantic plot isn’t quite as strong in this book as in the first book in this duology, Oh. My. Gods., because Phoebe is now in a relationship with a boyfriend who loves her–though the author does put in some roadblocks to their romance. Mainly the story focuses on Phoebe’s experiences in getting her powers under control, which produces many wacky situations.

Fans of the first book in this series will be delighted to discover this cute sequel–I certainly was! This book is predominantly geared toward us. While it is possible that readers who haven’t read OMG might enjoy this book anyway, their experience would be greatly enhanced by reading OMG first.

The Carrie Diaries

The Carrie Diaries Review

The book cover itself is like eye candy with the Louis Vuitton inspired style, kind of like carrying a high fashion piece in my purse! Love it…!

Candace Bushnell was spot on with Carrie’s personality when remembering the show. If you follow the show as much as I have, you cannot take the book to literally because it doesn’t line up with what Carrie has said in the previous seasons regarding her family life. The reader really gets a sense of how Carrie develops into the writer that she is well-known for in New York City. I did find this book in the young adult section but I thought, “What the heck” it’s Candace Bushnell it’s gotta be good! Carrie is getting through her senior year in high school with her closest friends. Or so she thought that one was one of her best friend’s that you will find out in the end. Carrie recalls her first crush that turns out to be anything but prince charming throughout the story. There are several moments where you just cannot put the book down because you have to know what happens next. The book does mention that Carrie mentions that she likes to cook which I found pretty strange because she isn’t known for her culinary skills in the show. Again, reminded myself to not take this too literally with the show. Carrie begins her writing at her high school in a small newspaper where she figures out what it is that she wants to write about. She finds writing inspiration in a number of unexpected areas. There are plenty of girl and boy drama like there is in any high school setting. We find out what her mother, father and siblings are like at home. Carrie’s personality is strong, funny, strange, witty, and naive in a way. Just as we know her from the series but younger of course. She does describe what she wears and how she wears them but isn’t a total fashionista, yet. Carrie’s girlfriends aren’t in the picture yet but in the end there is a surprise to how she met one of them. We also get a view on how she begins to start her love affair with New York City.

Bushnell is releasing the second book of “The Carrie Diaries” in 2011. I will be waiting and wanting more to see what else is in stored for Carrie as she begins her life in New York City.

I will stop here so to not give the whole story away…..I do highly recommend this book to any Sex and the City fan because they will LOVE it! It is a fast read so be prepared to want more from Bushnell. My boyfriend is out buying me, “Trading Up” to tide me over right after reading “The Carrie Diaries” craving more reading from Bushnell’s fantastic book collection.

The Carrie Diaries Overview

The Carrie Diaries is the coming-of-age story of one of the most iconic characters of our generation.

Up until now, Carrie and her friends have been inseparable. Then Sebastian Kydd comes into the picture, and a friend’s betrayal makes her question everything.

With an unforgettable cast of characters, The Carrie Diaries is the story of how a regular girl learns to think for herself and evolves into a sharp, insightful writer. The Chosen

August 25, 2010

The Chosen Review

This short novel is a story of two fathers and two sons; one son, Reuven, is a fairly conservative Jew, perhaps even Orthodox, but with a modern outlook. His father is a noted academic, Talmud critical scholar, and Zionist. The other young man, Danny, is the son of a Hassidic rebbe, who is the leader of a tightly-knit, isolated Russian immigrant community who came to United States fleeing antisemitic persecution.

Written clearly and straightforwardly, Reuven, narrating in first person, tells us about his experiences and interactions with Danny and how each other’s father had a decisive influence over each child, even though the fathers themselves never personally met each other.

Potok captures the differences between the conservatives and the ultra-Orthodox without going into technical dissertations. Instead, Potok presents us with what each branch of Judaism does instead of jumping into long dogmatic compare-and-contrast narratives.

The result is enchanting. I only notionally knew about the different schools of Jewish thought and practice but in Potok’s portrayal, the reader can see readily the differences and that these differences are anything but nuanced.

I find Potok’s more effective than many primers in Judaism that I’ve read: Potok told me what each group thought of each other against the momentous event that lead to the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. Conventional wisdom would lead one to believe that all Jews wanted their own state in Palestine, yet one is surprised to learn that this wasn’t the case. Many among the Ultra-Orthodox decried the founding of Israel on theological grounds. For, according to them only the Messiah could reestablish the People in the Land of Israel, whereas more secularized Jews either dismissed that idea or, better still, wanted to seized the initiative from God – with no disrespect intended to the Deity.

Potok’s story transcends religious boundaries. It is the story about fathers and sons. I passed along the book to my eldest son who devoured it and enjoyed it. It also added to his level of awareness about other people’s beliefs and chosen way of life. Get The Chosen. I recommend it!

The Chosen Overview

“Anyone who finds it is finding a jewel. Its themes are profound and universal.”
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
It is the now-classic story of two fathers and two sons and the pressures on all of them to pursue the religion they share in the way that is best suited to each. And as the boys grow into young men, they discover in the other a lost spiritual brother, and a link to an unexplored world that neither had ever considered before. In effect, they exchange places, and find the peace that neither will ever retreat from again….

The Chosen Specifications

Few stories offer more warmth, wisdom, or generosity than this tale of two boys, their fathers, their friendship, and the chaotic times in which they live. Though on the surface it explores religious faith–the intellectually committed as well as the passionately observant–the struggles addressed in The Chosen are familiar to families of all faiths and in all nations.

In 1940s Brooklyn, New York, an accident throws Reuven Malther and Danny Saunders together. Despite their differences (Reuven is a Modern Orthodox Jew with an intellectual, Zionist father; Danny is the brilliant son and rightful heir to a Hasidic rebbe), the young men form a deep, if unlikely, friendship. Together they negotiate adolescence, family conflicts, the crisis of faith engendered when Holocaust stories begin to emerge in the U.S., loss, love, and the journey to adulthood. The intellectual and spiritual clashes between fathers, between each son and his own father, and between the two young men, provide a unique backdrop for this exploration of fathers, sons, faith, loyalty, and, ultimately, the power of love. (This is not a conventional children’s book, although it will move any wise child age 12 or older, and often appears on summer reading lists for high school students.)

A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League

August 24, 2010

A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League Review

The difficult journey from hopelessness to “hope in the unseen,” to, that is, faith that a better life awaits, is an often told story. In America, we have the “Autobiography” of Benjamin Franklin; slave narratives, like Frederick Douglass’s “Narrative”; poverty-to-riches fiction like Horatio Alger’s; immigrant narratives, like David Eggers’s “What is the What.” There is more than one account of minority students and their path to the Ivy League. For a writer with this sort of “redemption” material, the difficult task is to shape a story whose ending we might guess at but whose details are so compelling that a reader can’t put the book down. And this Ron Suskind has done. Because he tells Cedric Lavar Jennings’s story in the voices not only of Cedric, but also of his mother, Barbara; his father, Cedric Gilliam; his classmates and teachers at Ballou High school and at Brown University; his pastor, Bishop Long; and many others, the book has a complexity that a similar story told in a single voice could not have. Suskind presents these people exactly as they are, with not only their strengths but their weaknesses in full view: Barbara’s difficulties with money management; Cedric’s standoffishness when his dorm mates attempt to befriend him; the father’s struggle to stay off heroin.

It is difficult to call this book “inspirational,” as some have done. As Suskind points out, he chose to profile Cedric Jennings precisely because “the basic appeal of Cedric’s story was never rooted in his exceptionalism . . .he is, in his basic makeup, so very much like countless other young people . . .”. And Suskind does not spare the institutions that fail students like Cedric every day: the bleak public school where learning is almost impossible, the “sink-or-swim approach for poorly prepared minority students at places like Brown. Throughout the book, Suskind explores both the positive and negative aspects of affirmative action, letting the details of Cedric’s experience make a case for it. This book is one family’s experience. It does not–it cannot–encompass the experience of every inner city child who hopes for the unseen. But it does offer powerful testimony not just for broad prescriptions or programs, but for the incremental powers of love and determination. Recently on NPR, I heard a review of “A Hope in the Unseen” as one of those books not to be missed. The reviewer was right.

A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League Overview

At Ballou Senior High, a crime-infested school in Washington, D.C., honor students have learned to keep their heads down. Like most inner-city kids, they know that any special attention in a place this dangerous can make you a target of violence. But Cedric Jennings will not swallow his pride, and with unwavering support from his mother, he studies and strives as if his life depends on it–and it does. The summer after his junior year, at a program for minorities at MIT, he gets a fleeting glimpse of life outside, a glimpse that turns into a face-on challenge one year later: acceptance into Brown University, an Ivy League school.

At Brown, finding himself far behind most of the other freshmen, Cedric must manage a bewildering array of intellectual and social challenges. Cedric had hoped that at college he would finally find a place to fit in, but he discovers he has little in common with either the white students, many of whom come from privileged backgrounds, or the middle-class blacks. Having traveled too far to turn back, Cedric is left to rely on his faith, his intelligence, and his determination to keep alive his hope in the unseen–a future of acceptance and reward that he struggles, each day, to envision.

A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League Specifications

Ron Suskind won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 1995 for his stories on Cedric Jennings, a talented black teenager struggling to succeed in one of the worst public high schools in Washington, D.C. Suskind has expanded those features into a full-length nonfiction narrative, following Jennings beyond his high-school graduation to Brown University, and in the tradition of Leon Dash’s Rosa Lee and Alex Kotlowitz’s There Are No Children Here, delivers a compelling story on the struggles of inner-city life in modern America. While it appears to have a happy ending (with Jennings earning a B average in his sophomore year), A Hope in the Unseen is not without a few caveats (at times, Jennings feels profoundly alienated from his white peers). Trite as it may sound to say, this book teaches a lesson about the virtue of perseverance, and it’s definitely worth reading. –John J. Miller

Orley Farm (Penny Books)

August 23, 2010

Orley Farm (Penny Books) Review

When I first read “Orley Farm” about 15 years ago (it was my second Trollope novel — I’ve since read over 25 of them including the superb Barsetshire and Palliser series), it instantly became one of my all-time favorite books and Anthony Trollope was soon to become my favorite novelist. All of his fans know how he can create such realistic characters and make such pithy and still relevant observations about people and the upper/middle class human condition. Obviously, “Orley Farm” must be considered one of his best stand-alone novels. However, on re-reading the novel, I had a problem.

Initially, let me say that I still consider it to be a near-great book and Trollope rarely tops the number of dead-on observations he made about people here. My problem is that the major plot makes no sense, and the secondary plot is extremely frustrating to read in modern times. First, let’s consider the major plot of the alleged forgery (SPOILER ALERT!!!!). Are we to really understand that a sheltered woman like Lady Mason could forge not one, but three signatures so accurately as to fool writing experts (which undoubtely would have been retained in both trials) as well as the signers themselves? The same person who apparently had never forged another signature in her life? I don’t think so.

As far as the second major plot is concerned, I don’t know about others, but it really started to annoy me that in 19th Century Victorian England, a man and a woman who were on the verge of getting engaged would spend virtually no time together, would not even kiss each other, and would refer to each other formally by last names until that magical post “pressure of the hand” moment when the woman finally agrees to become the man’s wife. Perhaps it really was like that back then, but I can’t tell you how many times I rolled my eyes in the scenes where Felix and Madeline would oh so tentatively try to express their feelings for each other. Sometimes I would literally shout out loud, “Oh for God’s sake just run away to some remote part of the estate and roll in the hay a bit!!”

Still a great novel, but I liked it better on my first reading.

Orley Farm (Penny Books) Overview

Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. He wrote penetrating novels on political, social, and gender issues and conflicts of his day. In 1867 Trollope left his position in the British Post Office to run for Parliament as a Liberal candidate in 1868. After he lost, he concentrated entirely on his literary career. While continuing to produce novels rapidly, he also edited the St Paul’s Magazine, which published several of his novels in serial form. His first major success came with The Warden (1855) – the first of six novels set in the fictional county of Barsetshire. The comic masterpiece Barchester Towers (1857) has probably become the best-known of these. Trollope’s popularity and critical success diminished in his later years, but he continued to write prolifically, and some of his later novels have acquired a good reputation. In particular, critics generally acknowledge the sweeping satire The Way We Live Now (1875) as his masterpiece. In all, Trollope wrote forty-seven novels, as well as dozens of short stories and a few books on travel.
